A riveting first-half that swung first to table toppers Burntwood and then Newport, was followed by a disappointing and disjointed second, which befell inconsistencies that marred an otherwise competitive game. Newport needed to remain ahead after the break but when Burntwood slipped through on the blindside, the game constantly tipped in Burntwood’s favour, whose strength and size was enough to see off Newport’s valiant efforts.
Burntwood started with the early momentum forcing Newport to defend desperately. Big hits from Rob Meyer, Alastair Heath and Billy Parry averted potential Burntwood breakthroughs and an almighty scramble under the posts adjudged to be held-up gave Newport a deserved reprieve and space to commence their own attacks. Newport’s missed penalty kick then reinvigorated Burntwood who rocked the pendulum back enough to kick their own three points with Newport down to fourteen.
Newport’s turn to attack saw Luke Kendall pick up at number eight, Phil Bradley making space for Tom Griffiths to drive his way through for Newport’s first points. Burntwood immediately replied having somehow slipped free from a tackle during Newport’s purple patch but it wasn’t long before Meyer fought himself free and danced through Burntwood’s hefty forwards to put Newport ahead.
Burntwood’s early second-half try was a portent for the rest of the match. Burntwood found their way over Newport’s goal-line twice from short distance penalties and their third from a rapid turnover deep in Newport’s territory. Newport had another period with fourteen and despite taking every opportunity to counter Burntwood’s pressure, they somehow found it difficult to make it stick.
Newport’s efficient attacking in the first half couldn’t carry over into the second when they were unable to gain enough territory against a determined and organised Burntwood. Burntwood’s display demonstrated the reason for their league position, but Newport’s character and ability also showed through with merit as worthy contenders, which no doubt can only continue to grow.
