Macclesfield U16 (Cheshire Champions) v Newport U16 (Shropshire Champions)

It was always going to be a tough challenge and Newport made a nervy start and uncharacteristically we made too many unforced errors, this inevitably caused us a headache putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves.

However after 10 minutes we started to create some pressure ourselves and scored some great team tries finishing the half 15-0 up.

Second half facing a lot of fresh legs, the quality of the opposition had clearly gone up and for large parts we found ourselves at the wrong end of the pitch.

Defending for long periods close to your own try line is difficult and some good play meant Maccelsfield were able to get back in the game but I love our never say die attitude and we hit back with our own scores. The defence on the lineout just before the end of the match was brilliant driving them the whole Maccelsfield pack back and smashing them into touch.

Maccelsfield are one of the top teams around and to beat them on their own patch is a fantastic achievement, we seemed to have every decision go against today and unfortunately away from home this does happen sometimes!!.

What we must do is keep our discipline and let our rugby do the talking.

Easier said than done with some of today’s decisions!!
