Match Report - Newport 2nds vs Wolverhampton 2nds
A wet and windy day at the old showground started off with a scrappy first fifteen, the ball changing hands multiple times through handling errors as both teams adjusted to life post Christmas. The Newport forwards put their festive weight gain to good use, sending Wolverhampton’s scrum backwards and turning the ball over. Shortly after, excellent handling from Dan Griffin put Fin Barnes through on a lovely line for the first try of the match, converted by Benny Elliot. 7-0.
Wolverhampton quickly hit back, poor discipline in Newport’s own half gifting them a driving maul on Newport’s 5 metre, and some quick thinking resulted in a score in the corner, conversion missed, 7-5. Shortly after Wolverhampton scored another try, taking advantage of an overlap to score under the posts. Try converted, 7-12. Newport hit back before the half with a lovely score from Connor Vernon on his senior rugby debut - some smart interplay on the backs saw him get over in the corner. Half time score, 12-12.
The second half began slowly again, but Newport’s sustained scrum dominance and resulting penalties enabled them to control territory and possession, eventually allowing Ollie Neil to score on 55 mins, again converted - 19-12. Arguably the try of the game came on the 65th minute, with delightful handling in the backs allowing Benny Elliot to carve through the wolves defence on a delicious line and score. Benny converted his own try, 26-12.
Multiple tries soon followed, some excellent strength and running from Fin Barnes for his 2nd, and then more smart play in the backs for Connor Vernons 2nd of the game. The score: 36-12. The match finished with a try for both teams, firstly an outrageous hit from Ollie Neil sent Wolves no 15’s ribs back to 2021, and in the resulting ruckus Chris Lindsey dotted the ball down for Newport’s 7th of the game. Wolverhampton finished strongly, with a well worked forwards try to finish off the game. Final score 43-17.
Man of the match: Connor Vernon. Thanks to Wolverhampton for a match played in good spirits. The legion march onwards!
