Harborne RFC

20 - 7

(HT 0-0)

Newport (Salop) RUFC

Newport Newport began with real attacking intent with a fresh back line who sought to give Newport a different edge. After scoring first, Newport’s attacking thrust began to gradually lose cohesion, allowing Harborne to fend Newport off whilst maximising their own opportunities. Fast movement and quick hands in successive moves between Ed Udale, Luke Kendall and Will Galbraith, and then Pete Thomas, Galbraith, Harry Bailey and George Crow pegged Harborne back. Newport were dominating the early tempo with dynamism and inevitably their gained territory gave Sam Jones the opportunity to charge across the line from Newport’s five-yard penalty. Harborne immediately responded finding players over on their left wing to go ahead and then both sides confounding play with forward passes, which seemed to drop in Harborne’s favour, when their change of direction from the centre, again found players over on their left wing. Newport persevered attacking from their back line, Bailey creating a good opening and Rob Taylor gathering from full-back and charging to just short of Harborne’s tryline. Through the second half, Newport still found themselves with chances and early on an unnecessarily flat attacking line, in space, frustratingly elicited another forward pass. Newport worked hard to gain territory but either undid themselves failing to make touch from penalties or minor errors giving Harborne the chance to undo Newport’s hard work, by simply kicking clear. Kicking the points at their first opportunity, Harborne had managed the pressure and set themselves up to continue the same; whilst Newport worked hard for nought, Harborne kept their patience and waited for their next opening. Finding themselves with a player advantage, after Newport’s alleged dangerous play, and loosing stalwart Ben Turner through injury, Harborne inevitably breached Newport’s tryline from short distance. And although Newport continued to attack, searching for points till the end, the task by this point was too big to climb. The ingredients for Newport are clearly there, some composure and elimination of errors could easily have given Newport a better outcome in this fixture
